SMB experiences benefits of virtualization

Numerous organizations now use virtualization to improve the effectiveness of their overall IT infrastructure and the technology is also becoming more popular among small and medium-sized businesses.
InformationWeek recently highlighted how one SMB turned to virtualization to address compliance issues created by the company's growth. Acorda Therapeutics, a biotech company, grew from 85 employees to 350 workers in just over five years. To address this development, the business needed a solution to lessen the strain on its servers and other IT systems.
By virtualizing its infrastructure, Acorda no longer has to spend as much time managing their systems and can focus on security and project management more effectively, InformationWeek noted.
"[The extra time] also enables us to be proactive and see what the best practices are, rather than always scrambling to respond to break-fixes," Acorda network operations senior manager Josh Bauer told the news source.
SMBs worldwide are planning to adopt virtualization in the near future. Acronis recently conducted a survey of 6,000 SMB managers from 18 countries and found that nearly 30 percent expect to virtualize their servers by the end of 2012, Computerworld reported.
